The famous wine estate Joh. Jos. Prüm was founded in 1911 in Wehlen, on the Mosel. It is one of the most unique white wine producers in Germany.
After a very mild winter, budbreak started early, in mid of April. Flowering was early, at the beginning of June, and the continued hot weather caused the grapes to grow very fast. They started picking in early October, but unfortunately the harvest had to be interrupted repeatedly by rain and there had to be extra care into the selection of the grapes. Unlike 2013, which was almost exclusively an Auslese and Goldcap Auslese year, 2014 is a return to a classic vintage. They harvested mostly Kabinett and Spätlese, but also some fine Auslese, while only a few botrytised berries could be selected for higher concentration levels.
Graacher Himmelreich (“Kingdom of heaven in the village of Grach) faced more westwards, little less steep and deeper soils than Wehlener Sonnenuhr, weather-beaten grey slate soil with good water reservoirs
Picked by hand; predominantly singe pale; fermentation in stainless steel tanks with wild yeast.
