Vintage 2016 at BARON Knyphausen:
It seemed to be one of the most rainy years ever. During the months May to July we had more than 200 l/m² rainfall. Normally we have around 260 l/m² per year. The soil was not able to dry out to let us work properly in the vineyards for some weeks. Furthermore, we had to invest a lot of time in spraying, more than double the times we went out to protect our fruits. At the end it all turned out positive and we did not encounter too many problems with rotten grapes compared to some regions which have been hit hard by the wet spring/early summer. After the rainy summertime we had a very hot and sunny Indian summer. In September we had day temperatures above 86°F (30°C) with the risk of sunburn of the grapes. But this weather improved the quality significantly. We started our picking-season at the 4th of October and finished it at the 18th of October with in total a very high quality of the grapes but low quantity compared to regular years.
