The Thanisch estate is currently in the hands of Sophia Thanisch, who is holding up the wine growing tradition in the 11th family generation. The focus is solely on Riesling from vineyards in Bernkastel, Mosel. Some of the vines are still original ungrafted rootstocks, which explaines their great rapture at the wine lists in famous restaurants over the world.
The actual, and compared to previous years, relatively late start of harvesting (11 October) reflects the weather caprices of a cool spring and an overall rainy summer. As a result, we had a late bud break and the vegetation was almost 3 weeks behind. Fortunately, many sunny days prevailed during the first weeks of the harvest, which further increased the Oechsle degree of the berries. The result - an excellent Kabinett vintage is in the cellar with extract-rich wines that promise structure and finesse.
Vineyard Bernkasteler Badstube, very steep slopes, south exposure, Devonian slate soil, old (20-40 years), ungrafted rootstocks
hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation, aged in small steel and oak barrels
