94 pts. James Suckling
The Thanisch estate is currently in the hands of Sophia Thanisch, who is holding up the wine growing tradition in the 11th family generation. The focus is solely on Riesling from vineyards in Bernkastel, Mosel. Some of the vines are still original ungrafted rootstocks, which explaines their great rapture at the wine lists in famous restaurants over the world.
The winter of 2020 was good with sufficient rainfall; this was followed by a warm spring that again brought early budding and flowering. Harvesting presented great challenges to the team, especially with the pandemic and bad weather. However, with all hygiene measures in place, harvesting began on September 22 and all qualities from entry level to very ripe Auslese were harvested in 4 weeks. The 2020 vintage captivates with classic Riesling wines that have a fresh acidity and moderate alcohol content.
