The Thanisch estate is currently in the hands of Sophia Thanisch, who is holding up the wine growing tradition in the 11th family generation. The focus is solely on Riesling from vineyards in Bernkastel, Mosel. Some of the vines are still original ungrafted rootstocks, which explaines their great rapture at the wine lists in famous restaurants over the world.
March was wet but warm and we had an early bud break. In May some rather cold and frosty days caused late flowering. The summer was very hot and dry and towards the end of July heavy rainfalls followed by cool days in September. Harvest started on September 30th with almost daily rain. A strict selection was necessary which resulted in a 30% less crop than last year but with high quality grapes and an appealing acidity.
Bernkasteler Badstube, Devonian slate soil, very steep southern exposure, grown on old, non-grafted rootstock vines
Hand-picked and multiple selected grapes, spontaneously fermented and aged in small steel or wooden barrels.
