The Thanisch estate is currently in the hands of Sophia Thanisch, who is holding up the wine growing tradition in the 11th family generation. The focus is solely on Riesling from vineyards in Bernkastel, Mosel. Some of the vines are still original ungrafted rootstocks, which explaines their great rapture at the wine lists in famous restaurants over the world.
March was wet but warm and we had early budbreak. In May, some rather cold and frosty days made for late flowering. The summer was very hot and dry and there were heavy rains towards the end of July, followed by cool days in September. Harvest began on September 30 with almost daily rain. A rigorous selection was necessary, resulting in a 30% lower harvest than last year, but with high quality grapes and an appealing acidity.
Vineyard Bernkasteler Badstube, very steep slopes, south exposure, Devonian slate soil, old (20-40 years), not grafted rootstocks
Handpicking, spontaneous fermentation, aging in small steel or wooden barrels
