goldmedal of "Franconian wines"
92 points Falstaff
The Bürgerspital is one of Germany´s largest wine growing estates with 300 acres. It is located in Würzburg, which is part of the Franken region. The estate is a founding member of the VDP association and offers vineyard sites like Würzburger Stein, Stein Harfe (=stone harp) or Würzburger Innere Leiste. They cultivate typical franconian grape varieties like Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus, aswell as some classics like Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.
The hot and long summer left its mark, not seen since 2003. 2018 will be remembered for lots of sunshine, warm nights and very light rainfall. The successful results started in the vineyards, with good soil work and canopy management. We began to pick young vines on August 21st with the rest beginning August 26th. Due to the early harvest the grapes were picked in ripe condition and the wines are fresh with good to moderate alcohol levels and fine aromatic flavors, average quality and volumes.
