History

Today, with 222 years of corporate history, Valckenberg is the oldest family owned wine merchant in Germany, being run by Wilhelm Steifensand, a seventh generation descendant. Royal dynasties and many renowned personalities of the times are Valckenberg customers.

The history of the wine city Worms locating Valdkenberg headquaters begins with the Romans more than 2,000 years ago.

About 1400, the monastery Kloster Liebfrauenstift is founded and the Liebfrauen canons begin cultivating vines in the monastery gardens.

Pilgrims praying at the madonna statue exclaim: “This wine tastes as sweet as the milk of the Blessed Mother“

In 1808 the dutch trader Peter Joseph Valckenberg purchases the vineyard and leads it to world success.

Demand for Liebfrauenmilch grows for more than a century and it becomes synonymous with Rhine wine. As the producer of the original, Valckenberg launches the first German wine brand – “Liebfrauenmilch Madonna” – in 1908.

The export success of Liebfraumilch wines fosters the demand for German wine worldwide. From then on, Valckenberg numbers among the leading wine merchants of Europe.

After the second world war, Worms and Valckenberg lie in ruin. Gerhard von Gustedt keeps the company going during the second world war and re-establishes domestic and foreign business connections. His son-in-law, Hans-Joachim Steifensand, concentrates on export markets during the fifties

Today Valckenberg has multiple domestic partnerships and is active in 24 countries worldwide.
